Why Mental Health Awareness Month Matters

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This special time each year is dedicated to helping people learn more about mental health issues. 

It aims to educate the public about the resources and support available for those struggling with mental health problems. Additionally, it seeks to reduce the stigma and negative attitudes that are often associated with mental illness. 

But why is Mental Health Awareness Month so important?


Mental health impacts everyone

Statistics show that the percentage of adults reporting severe thoughts of suicide is – over 12.1 million adults. Mental health problems affect not just strangers but also our families, friends, coworkers, and even ourselves. Mental health issues are prevalent, touching the lives of many people we know and care about. 


Here are some damning stats:

  • 48 million have an anxiety disorder

  • 21 million have major depression

  • 9 million have post-traumatic stress disorder

  • 7 million have bipolar disorder

  • 80 % of us go through a diagnosable Mental Health Crisis at some time in our adult life


By talking openly about mental health, we can help create a more supportive and understanding environment for everyone. This openness can encourage those struggling to seek help and can foster a community where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health.

With this knowledge, people can better recognize when they or someone they care about might need help.  

  • Mental Health Awareness Month helps people understand more about mental health and brings everyone together. It creates a sense of community and support, reminding people they are not alone. 


Taking action about mental health awareness

To create more awareness on the topic:

  • Educate yourself: Take the time to learn about different mental health conditions and how to spot them in yourself and others.

  • Spread the word: Talk openly about mental health with the people in your life, like your friends, family, and coworkers.

  • Challenge the stigma: If you hear someone saying mean things about mental illness, speak up and explain why it's not okay.

  • Seek help if you need it: If you're having a hard time with your mental health, don't be scared to ask for help from a professional. It's okay to get support when you need it.
